Lurgan Man Sentenced for Theft and Domestic Abuse Against Parents
Nathan Power, 28, from Springwell Gardens in Lurgan, appeared via video link from Maghaberry Prison at Craigavon Magistrates Court.
He pleaded guilty to two counts of theft and two counts of domestic abuse.
On November 26 and December 9 last year, Power stole around £80 from his mother. On December 4 last year, he stole £80 from his father.
Police received a report from Power's father on December 9 last year.
The coercive control lasted two years as Power sought money from his parents for drug debts.
Power's barrister Conor Lunny stated the defendant had served a nine-month jail term already. Lunny noted Power passed drug tests, stayed out of trouble, exercised, and worked as an orderly in custody.
Lunny said Power's parents supported him as much as possible, but addiction and mental health issues led Power to aggressively demand money for debts, forming the basis of the abuse charges.
Deputy District Judge Gerard Trainor imposed four months per theft count and six months per abuse count, all concurrent. He activated a suspended sentence, totalling nine months custody. Restraining orders protect Power's parents.
