Laboratory staff at Ulster Hospital received recognition from the South Eastern Health and Social Care Trust on National DNA Day for their work in patient care.

Biomedical scientists and laboratory technicians analyse samples and decode genetic information to confirm diagnoses and guide treatment plans.

Neil Kirkpatrick, Head of Biomedical Science at the South Eastern Trust, stated that a single DNA change can alter red blood cell shape from circle to crescent.

In the Haematology Lab, staff examine genetic markers for blood cancers and disorders.

The Blood Bank matches blood groups based on genetics to the correct patient and product.

Kirkpatrick noted there are 48 recognised blood group systems, beyond the common ABO types.

Genetic markers for leukaemia and blood disorders assist in diagnosing conditions and selecting treatments.

He added that laboratory work occurs behind the scenes but determines patient treatment paths.
