Man remanded after boiling water thrown at Strabane courthouse
Corrie Anthony McKenna, 34, from Sheskin Park in Greysteel, appeared at Dungannon Magistrates' Court on Saturday. He faces charges of assault causing actual bodily harm, attempted grievous bodily harm, and possession of an offensive weapon - a kettle of boiling water - with intent to commit an offence. McKenna denies all charges.
The incident took place at Strabane Magistrates' Court in County Tyrone on Thursday around 11:00 BST. It occurred in the waiting area before a hearing for Dylan McCrossan, 32, from Beechmount Village in Strabane. McCrossan faces a charge of murdering Stephen Holmes.
Holmes, 31, received serious injuries in Strabane on 3 February 2025. He was treated in the intensive care unit at Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast and died five days later.
McKenna approached Richard McCrossan, brother of Dylan McCrossan, from about one metre away. He threw boiling water at Richard McCrossan, causing burns to his face, neck, shoulders, arm, and torso. The victim and his partner identified McKenna, who wore a distinctive orange T-shirt.
McKenna fled the scene. A scuffle followed between the McCrossan family and the family of Stephen Holmes. McKenna was arrested at his Greysteel home later that night.
Richard McCrossan received treatment from paramedics at the scene. He was taken to Altnagelvin Hospital in Londonderry, then transferred to the burns unit at Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast.
A detective connected McKenna to the charges. The judge refused bail due to the seriousness of the offences and concerns for the victim and witnesses. The next hearing is on 13 May at Dungannon Magistrates' Court.
