Ministers Visit Down Family Benefiting from Disabled Facilities Grant Adaptations
Communities Minister Gordon Lyons and Health Minister Mike Nesbitt visited a family in County Down to view home adaptations funded by the Disabled Facilities Grant. The ministers met Anne-Marie Kelly and her son Conor, who has autism and learning disabilities. The modifications in their Downpatrick home include a ground-floor bedroom, bathroom, and soundproofing, based on an occupational therapist's recommendation.
Lyons stated the grant ensures safe suitable housing for residents. He noted that over 800 adaptations worth more than £13 million were approved across Northern Ireland in the last financial year. The scheme is administered by the Northern Ireland Housing Executive for the Department for Communities.
Nesbitt stressed that accessible housing reduces health inequalities and supports mental and physical wellbeing. He mentioned the departments' new inclusive home design guide, the first in Northern Ireland for people with cognitive and sensory impairments.
Kelly said the changes provide her son with safety and confidence, improving his quality of life and giving the family peace of mind. She thanked the occupational therapist and Housing Executive Grants Department.
Lyons announced his department is reviewing the grant scheme, with public consultation proposals planned later this year to improve administration and outcomes.
