A new guide to help make homes more accessible for people with cognitive and sensory impairments has been launched by two Stormont ministers.

Health Minister Mike Nesbitt and Communities Minister Gordon Lyons jointly introduced the 'Designing Homes for All' guide at an event in Belfast.

The guide provides practical design recommendations for constructing and adapting homes to better support individuals who have difficulties with understanding, processing information or sensory perception.

Speaking at the launch, Minister Nesbitt said well-designed living spaces can be transformative for those with cognitive impairments and their families. He noted the guide builds on earlier work focused on physical and mobility access and underlined the value of involving disabled people and families early in design.

Minister Lyons said a suitable home is essential for independence, health and wellbeing. He added the guide is an important step towards his aim of ensuring everyone in Northern Ireland has a home that meets their needs.

The document is intended for architects, builders, developers, healthcare staff and families considering making changes to their properties. It applies to both new builds and existing dwellings.

The guide can be found on the Department of Health's website.
