Review Launched into Disabled Facilities Grant in Northern Ireland
The Department for Communities has announced a review of the Disabled Facilities Grant administered by the Housing Executive. The review involves the Minister for Communities and the Minister of Health.
Sinn Féin Councillor Nuala McLernon welcomed the announcement. She stated that the review must account for challenges faced by families and individuals dependent on the grant.
Councillor McLernon noted that she proposed a motion to Mid Ulster Council in March calling for an increase in the grant's maximum threshold. The council passed the motion.
Families face delays or inability to complete necessary home adaptations, she said. Available funding falls short of recommendations from medical professionals due to higher construction and material costs.
Construction and labour costs have increased substantially in recent years while the grant cap stayed the same, according to Councillor McLernon. People needing the support most are affected.
Access, inclusion, and dignity should not rely on personal wealth, she added. The system requires updates to allow safe and independent living at home.
