Communities Minister Gordon Lyons and Health Minister Mike Nesbitt visited the home of Anne-Marie Kelly and her son Conor in Downpatrick. Conor has autism and learning disabilities. The family received home adaptations in 2024 through the Disabled Facilities Grant.

An occupational therapist recommended a ground floor bedroom and bathroom with soundproofing. The Northern Ireland Housing Executive administers the means-tested grant for the Department for Communities. It funds adaptations recommended by occupational therapists.

Anne-Marie Kelly stated the changes improved Conor's safety and quality of life. Lyons said the visit showed how the grant enhances wellbeing for people with disabilities and their families. He committed to access for all who need it.

Nesbitt noted collaboration between health trusts and the Housing Executive Grants department. He said accessible housing helps reduce health inequalities. The departments produced an inclusive home design guide for cognitive and sensory impairments.

In the last financial year, over 800 adaptations worth more than £13 million received approval across Northern Ireland. The Department for Communities leads a review with the Department of Health and Housing Executive. Lyons plans public consultation proposals later this year.
