Funeral Held in Londonderry for Amy Doherty After Suspected Murder
Amy Doherty, 28, was found injured at a property in Summer Meadows Mews, Londonderry, on Saturday at about 10:20 GMT. She died later in hospital. A 30-year-old man remains in custody on suspicion of murder. Police stated on Wednesday that the suspect was receiving medical treatment and was unfit for interview.
Her Requiem Mass took place on Thursday at Holy Family Church in Ballymagroarty, Londonderry. Hundreds of mourners followed the cortege from her parents' home. The coffin arrived in a horse-drawn carriage.
Parish priest Fr Joe Gormley addressed the congregation. He called it a sad day for the family, parish, and city. He noted mourners were reflecting on her two children, Rhea and Ronan, and the events of last Saturday.
Fr Gormley described Doherty as a devoted mother to her children. He said they were the center of her life. She worked for five years as a nurse at Altnagelvin Hospital and as a carer at North West Care.
During the Covid period, she assisted patients by setting up video calls to connect with family and found ways to add humour in difficult times, Fr Gormley said.
Colleagues from Altnagelvin Hospital and North West Care formed a guard of honour with yellow roses. Several hundred people gathered in the church car park as the coffin entered the chapel.
Fr Gormley spoke of the need for society to value women and eradicate violence against them. He stated everyone has a role in supporting vulnerable women. Her family includes parents Patrick and Sharon, and brothers Shane and Ryan.
