Suspect in Amy Doherty Murder Case Deemed Medically Unfit for Police Interview
A 30-year-old man arrested on suspicion of murdering Amy Doherty in Londonderry remains unfit for police interview due to medical treatment. Police launched a murder investigation after attending a property in Summer Meadows Mews at around 10.20am on Saturday. Officers found 28-year-old Ms Doherty injured at the scene. The Northern Ireland Ambulance Service took her to hospital, where she died.
Detective Inspector Michelle Griffin of the Police Service of Northern Ireland Major Investigation Team confirmed the arrest. She stated enquiries continue and asked anyone with information to contact police on 101, quoting reference 469 - 21/03/26.
Ms Doherty was a mother of two young children, Rhea and Ronan. She worked as a carer with North West Care. Survivors include her parents Patrick and Sharon, brothers Shane and Ryan, grandparents John and Patricia Doherty and Margaret Mooney, and wider family.
Foyle MLA Ciara Ferguson addressed Stormont on the death. She noted it leaves two children without their mother and expressed support to the family, friends, and Derry community.
SDLP MLA Mark Durkan visited the Doherty family on Sunday evening. He described Ms Doherty as a selfless woman who gave much to others and extended sympathies to her children and relatives.
East Derry MLA Claire Sugden offered condolences to the family. She stated the children have lost the most important person in their lives.
Ms Doherty's funeral is scheduled for Thursday. A vigil in her memory will take place at Derry's Guildhall on Friday evening.
