Court Orders Retrial for Mother in 2021 Baby Stabbing Case
The Court of Appeal has ordered a retrial for a woman accused of murdering her eight-week-old son and attempting to murder her two-year-old daughter. The incident involved a double stabbing in Northern Ireland in July 2021.
In June 2023, a jury at Belfast Crown Court found her guilty of the baby's murder by majority verdict and unanimously guilty of attempting to murder the girl. She received a minimum sentence of 20 years. The woman accepted stabbing both children but denied the charges.
Both children received treatment at the Royal Belfast Hospital for Sick Children. Medical staff treated the girl successfully, but the boy was pronounced dead.
Her legal team challenged the convictions due to problems in the original trial process. Last year, the Court of Appeal quashed the verdicts, stating they could not confirm the guilty findings were safe.
Prosecution and defence disagreed on next steps after the quashing. A three-judge panel accepted prosecution arguments for fresh proceedings.
Lady Chief Justice Dame Siobhan Keegan scheduled the case for review and timetabling in May. No bail application was made, and the woman remains in custody.
Legal restrictions prevent publication of further details about the decision at this time.
