Over 60 representatives from community and voluntary organisations attended a conference on building community leadership in peacebuilding. The event took place in Holywell on Thursday 19 March.

Derry City and Strabane District Council organised the conference as part of its Co-Designed PEACEPLUS Action Plan. The Special EU Programmes Body manages the PEACEPLUS programme that supports the initiative.

Mayor Councillor Ruairí McHugh welcomed attendees. He stated that the council prioritises the £8 million PEACEPLUS local programme to deliver strategic impact through peer learning and skills in facilitation, dialogue, and innovation. He noted these skills connect diverse communities, address the past's legacy, and engage with post-conflict challenges.

Sue Divin, PEACE Programme Manager, said the programme supports 58 locally funded projects. She highlighted the need for accessible training amid financial pressures on the community and voluntary sector. The training targets practitioners in peacebuilding, cross-community, and cross-border work.

Gerard Deane of Holywell Trust facilitated the session. He expressed delight in supporting the workshop and emphasised creating space for dialogue on good relations challenges. He hoped participants would strengthen peacebuilding in their projects for positive change in the North West.

Sharon Doherty, Chair of the PEACEPLUS Board and representative of St Columb’s Park House, said the event builds sector capacity amid staff turnover and pressures. She noted value in free training on peacebuilding, diversity, and good relations, with strong demand leading to a fully booked event.
