Strabane Man Jailed Nine Months for Stalking Ex-Partner
Campbell Jackson, 41, from Miltown Park in Strabane, received a nine-month prison sentence at Strabane Magistrates Court on Thursday. The court convicted him last month on two counts of stalking and one count of improper use of communications. He had pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Police received a report from Jackson's ex-partner in July last year. She had sought refuge at a Women's Aid centre following domestic abuse by Jackson. Between August 10 and 17, Jackson contacted her through texts and calls. He used his own phone with a withheld number 17 times, his mother's phone, and she answered once.
On August 13, Jackson sent her a video zooming in on her location at the Women's Aid centre using a digital map. On August 15, he sent another video of himself filming the outside of the centre. On August 19, he drove past her at the Diamond in Derry and attempted to wave her down. Police arrested Jackson that day.
In his police interview, Jackson denied the allegations. At trial, he accepted her account of events but stated his actions did not amount to stalking and that she consented to the contact. A probation report indicated he showed no insight or accountability and maintained his innocence.
Defence counsel Dean Mooney stated no physical confrontations took place and no threatening messages were sent. Jackson had no prior convictions for violence or domestic offences. District Judge Alana McSorley noted Jackson's victim blaming and lack of accountability. She referred to the victim's statement detailing her distress and the lifelong psychological impact.
The judge imposed six months for the stalking counts and three months for improper use of communications. A two-year restraining order was also issued in favour of the victim. Jackson received £500 bail to appeal the sentence.
