Causeway Coast Council Hosts Pupil Voice Project Event at Ulster University
Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council held the finale of its Pupil Voice project at Ulster University’s Diamond Hall in Coleraine on 26 February. The event gathered elected members and secondary pupils from 10 post-primary schools in the area. Mark Carruthers and Peter Osbourne facilitated the proceedings.
The project seeks to increase young people's confidence, citizenship skills, and interaction with local political representatives. Pupils asked elected members about party priorities and key local matters during the event. The session included a speed-dating format followed by a panel discussion chaired by Mark Carruthers.
Ahead of the finale, schools conducted workshops on topical issues with shared-education partners. Pupils selected their main questions from those sessions.
Mayor Oliver McMullan attended and noted the value in hearing pupils' views directly. He stated that such events link young people with representatives to support positive change. Good Relations Officer Sara Glendinning highlighted the project's role in pupil engagement on relevant local topics and thanked elected members for their participation.
The Executive Office funded the project via the District Council Good Relations Programme.
