Strabane Sigersons GAA Club Launches Crowdfunder for Pitch Fencing and Walkway Upgrade
Strabane Sigersons GAA club has launched a Crowdfunder campaign aiming to raise £50,000 for perimeter fencing and a concrete walkway around its second training pitch in Ballycolman Estate, Strabane.
The total project cost is £67,278, with £37,902 for fencing including one vehicle gate and four single gates, and £29,376 for the walkway. Sport NI has pledged to fund 75 percent (£37,500) through the Olympic Legacy Fund if the club raises the remaining 25 percent (£12,500).
The pitch, built in 2007 with floodlights, currently lacks fencing, which prevents safe competitive games. The upgrades will secure the area and extend the facility's walkway to 1.31km, benefiting club teams, parents, local schools, Strabane Shamrocks Hurling club, walkers, and runners.
A club spokesperson stated that all funds will go directly to the installations, improving safe sport and recreation facilities. The grounds see daily public use as a road-free walking space, with plans to futureproof the walkway for lighting.
As of Tuesday, £5,140 had been raised. Donations can be made via the Crowdfunder page or at Sigersons Social Club.
The club has held discussions with Derry City and Strabane District Council on linking the walkway to the proposed Strabane to Sion Mills greenway along the River Mourne, enhancing active travel infrastructure for walkers and wheelchair users.
Strabane Greenways campaign group has called on the council to submit a planning application this year for the greenway's first section from Melvin to Sigersons GAA club to access active travel funding.
