DfI Approaches Final Call on Strabane Athletic Multi-Sport Stadium Bid
The Department for Infrastructure expects to rule soon on Strabane Athletic Football Club's multi-sport stadium application, submitted in 2018. Derry City and Strabane District Council approved the plans in 2021. The department assumed control in 2022 over regional matters.
The County Tyrone site features an outdoor football pitch, full-size indoor 3G arena, and community spaces. The club, established in 2010, plays at Melvin Arena, which does not satisfy Irish Football Association requirements. Strabane Athletic joins Northern Ireland's second tier next season and must host matches elsewhere.
SDLP MLA Daniel McCrossan described the delays as unjustified and harmful to the club. He urged approval, citing community backing from grassroots origins. McCrossan noted the club requires certainty to halt further spending on the project.
Club captain Liam McMenamin stated the facilities need to align with playing success for ongoing advancement. The department issued a refusal notice in 2023. Derry City and Strabane District Council sought a Planning Appeals Commission hearing.
The commission conducted its review in September 2025 and sent its report to the department in November. A department spokesperson confirmed the decision sits in final preparation. The spokesperson attributed the intervention to regional and sub-regional factors needing thorough examination.
