Utility Regulator Publishes February Newsletter with Updates on Engagements and Regulatory Actions
The Utility Regulator has published its February newsletter, outlining key activities and developments in electricity, gas and water regulation across Northern Ireland.
On 3 February, Chief Executive John French, along with Executive Directors Peter Russell and Kevin Shiels, visited Parliament Buildings at Stormont. They briefed MLAs from several parties on recent work by the regulator.
New measures to strengthen protections for non-domestic electricity and gas consumers were introduced on 4 February. On 5 February, a formal review commenced of gas tariffs for domestic and small business customers of SSE Airtricity Gas Supply in Greater Belfast and West areas, and Firmus Energy in the Ten Towns area.
The regulator welcomed the launch of the Warm Healthy Homes Strategy by Communities Minister Gordon Lyons on 5 February. It also noted the introduction of NIE Networks' Vulnerable Customer Strategy for 2026-2028, which enhances support for customers based on individual circumstances.
Staff members attended the E-world Energy and Water trade fair in Essen, Germany, on 10 and 11 February. On 17 and 18 February, the regulator hosted the UK Regulators' Network at its Belfast office, providing briefings on directorates and priorities.
Director Brian Mulhern and Markets Director Colin Broomfield participated in a Department for the Economy roundtable on 18 February, focusing on energy costs for intensive and high-growth sectors.
The newsletter spotlights Non-domestic Consumer Protection Manager Colin Magee and Regulatory Analyst Lauren Skillen-Baine for their roles in recent licence modifications. It also announces recruitment for various positions and lists published consultations and documents.
