Ballinamallard United stalwart Mervyn Nixon dies after 50 years of service
Mervyn Nixon, a long-serving figure at Ballinamallard United, has died after more than 50 years of involvement with the club.
Nixon was associated with the Co Fermanagh club since its reformation in 1975, holding roles including club secretary and player liaison. For the past 30 years he served as groundsman at Ferney Park.
The club announced his death in a statement, noting that his dedication and leadership had helped maintain the ground's reputation for an excellent playing surface.
His contribution extended beyond pitch maintenance, with Nixon taking responsibility for numerous tasks around the club, many of which went unnoticed by others.
He rarely missed a Mallards match, attending both home and away fixtures as an ever-present supporter.
The Nixon family has had a close association with Ballinamallard United since its reformation. The club extended its sincere sympathy to the entire family circle.
Tributes from the wider football community in Fermanagh and beyond recognised Nixon's commitment and the welcome he extended to visitors at Ferney Park.
Dungannon Swifts and Irvinestown Wanderers were among the clubs to offer condolences. Irvinestown Wanderers said Nixon made every person and club feel welcome at Ferney Park and would be sorely missed.
His contribution to Ballinamallard United and local football will be long remembered.
