Funeral details announced for Olympian Ciara Mageean after death from cancer
Funeral arrangements have been announced for Ciara Mageean, the Portaferry athlete who won a European 1500m title in 2024 and died on Sunday after being diagnosed with cancer in 2025. A funeral mass will be held at 2pm tomorrow in St Patrick's Church, Portaferry.
Mageean competed at the Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020 Olympics. In 2024, she became the first Irish athlete to win a European 1500m gold medal since Sonia O'Sullivan, who won the 3000m in 1994 and 5000m in 1998.
She married her partner Thomas Moran in October, weeks before her death. She is survived by her parents Christopher and Catherine, sisters Maire and Nuala, and brother Brendan.
World Athletics president Lord Sebastian Coe said her loss would be felt across the athletics community. He described her as a European champion and inspiration to many, and said it was a sad day for the sport.
Portaferry GAC, where Mageean played camogie in her youth, said they were devastated by the news. The club said she brought joy and excitement to everyone across Ireland, especially in Portaferry, and that throughout her illness she demonstrated immense courage and resilience.
Saint Mary's Primary School in Portaferry said Mageean was a frequent and very welcome visitor. Assumption Grammar School in Ballynahinch also paid tribute to their cherished past pupil, saying her kindness, strength, faith and unwavering determination were an inspiration.
