A 17-year-old boy is receiving hospital treatment for severe burns after he was punched and fell into a Halloween bonfire in Strabane on Saturday night.

The incident occurred at a bonfire in the Bradley Way area of the town, where a crowd of around 300 people had gathered.

According to accounts, the teenager was struck from behind by another male, causing him to lose consciousness and fall forward into the fire.

A 17-year-old girl, Tianna Patterson, who was present at the bonfire, rushed forward and, with the help of another young man, dragged the victim from the flames.

She has been in contact with the injured boy, who reportedly told her he has no memory of the incident until being pulled away from the fire.

Independent councillor Paul Gallagher said he had spoken to the boy's mother, describing her as distraught.

Gallagher said the teenager suffered burns to his face and hands and will require extensive medical care over a long recovery period.

The councillor criticised the bonfire event, saying such gatherings are destructive and pose a serious danger to young people.

Police have said no arrests have been made and are appealing for witnesses.

Detective Sergeant Moyne described the assault as reckless and dangerous, and commended the girl who helped the victim.

Officers have asked anyone who was filming at the bonfire to check their footage for evidence.
