Omagh man faces strangulation and assault charges after alleged domestic incident
A 38-year-old man appeared in Enniskillen Magistrates' Court on Monday, November 2, charged with non-fatal strangulation, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, and assaulting two police officers following an alleged domestic incident in Omagh.
Richard Aidan Slattery, of 110B Strule Park, Omagh, faces three charges. The offences are alleged to have occurred on October 31.
A police officer told the court that police were contacted by a third party and attended the property. The injured party opened the door showing injuries to her throat and bleeding from her legs. The officer said the house was in a poor condition, with blood found throughout the property and on the clothing of one of two children who were present.
As Slattery was being removed from the property, he allegedly pushed an officer, causing them to fall against railings. He then allegedly kicked another officer while inside a police vehicle.
Social Services subsequently removed the children from the property. The injured party was also arrested on suspicion of assault before being released on bail.
The officer referred to reports of domestic abuse involving the defendant's current and previous partners. Defence counsel highlighted that there had been no criminal charges in those reports.
Defence counsel said the situation developed after Slattery's partner produced a glass bottle with which she allegedly intended to cause harm. He said an ill-judged decision had been made by both parties to have a drink. The defence acknowledged that the right decision had been taken by Social Services in removing the children.
The case was adjourned until November 17.
