Police in Omagh arrested a banned driver on Monday night who was three times over the legal drink-drive limit.

The man was stopped during an operation in the town while driving a van. A PSNI spokesperson stated that drink driving destroys lives and causes carnage on the roads, warning people not to take the risk.

The arrest came on the same day the PSNI launched a road safety campaign in the South region, which covers the Fermanagh and Omagh District Council area. So far in 2026, 42 people have died on Northern Ireland’s roads, with 19 of those deaths occurring in the South Area.

Chief Superintendent Norman Haslett, the PSNI’s South Area Commander, called the loss of life utterly heart-breaking. He noted that a person dies in a road collision every five days, leaving families to receive devastating news.

He said society needs to examine driver behaviour and that all road users have a responsibility to change how they act. He stressed the need to transform the approach to road safety to prevent further needless deaths.
