A civic reception has been held in Derry for Cara Hamilton, the city’s entrant in the 2026 Rose of Tralee International Festival.

Mayor Uí Niallais hosted Ms Hamilton at the Guildhall on Monday, praising her ambassadorial qualities and the preparation required for the competition.

Ms Hamilton, from the Top of the Hill area, was accompanied by family and friends. She has recently completed a degree in Forensic Psychology and Criminal Justice.

The Derry Rose plays Gaelic football for Na Piarsaigh Doire Trasna, where a senior ladies’ team was formed this year. She also holds a Fáinne, an Irish language proficiency badge, and helps her sister work towards the same award.

The Rose of Tralee festival runs from 14 to 18 August in County Kerry. The selection events for the 32 participating roses, drawn from Ireland and international centres including the United States, Canada, New Zealand and the United Arab Emirates, will take place on the final two days at the Kerry Sports Academy.

First held in 1959, the festival is one of Ireland’s longest-running and includes family events, a fashion show and live concerts.

Ms Hamilton, who describes herself as a proud Derry woman, will represent the city and her community when she travels to Tralee next month.
