Belfast Fleadh Prepares 1,300 Volunteers Ahead of August Event
Belfast is preparing to host the Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann from 2 to 9 August, with more than 1,300 volunteers now fully registered to support the event. Organisers expect up to 800,000 attendees.
Training sessions have been running throughout July, including one held at the University of Ulster. Volunteers are being instructed on duties that include greeting arrivals at transport hubs, offering wayfinding across the city, supporting competitions and fringe events, and helping with Scoil Éigse music classes.
Participants will wear bright yellow T-shirts and hats to be easily identifiable. Their roles also cover waste and recycling advocacy and acting as venue runners.
Volunteer Now is coordinating the programme on behalf of Belfast City Council, Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann and Ards CCÉ.
Councillor Ian McLaughlin, chair of the council’s Strategic Policy and Resources Committee, said the volunteers would be central to the festival’s success. He praised their dedication and noted that their efforts would help showcase the city.
Denise Hayward, chief executive of Volunteer Now, said the experience offers volunteers a chance to build skills, gain experience and make lasting friendships.
All volunteer places for this year have been taken, but a reserve list is open. Registration for the 2027 event will begin later in August.
