Derry Mayor honours local world champion Irish dancer
Jenny Rose McLaughlin, a pupil at Harkin/McGinley Dance School, has been honoured by Derry City and Strabane District Council after winning the under-14 world title at the An Chomhdháil World Irish Dance Championships in Killarney earlier this year.
Mayor Councillor Grace Uí Niallais hosted a reception at the Mayor’s Parlour in the Guildhall on Tuesday 16 June. Ms McLaughlin attended with her parents Kate and Liam, brother Niall, and grandparents Margo McLaughlin and Michael McLaren.
Cllr Uí Niallais said the young dancer should be immensely proud of her achievement. The Mayor noted that the title was the result of sustained dedication and countless hours of practice. She added that Ms McLaughlin has a very bright future ahead.
The world championship success marks a significant milestone for the local dance school and for competitive Irish dancing in the north west.
