Portaferry Sea Shanty Festival to Return in Summer 2026
Portaferry will host the Sails & Sounds Maritime Heritage, Shanty and Ulster-Scots Festival from Friday 31 July to Monday 3 August 2026. The event, grant aided by Ards and North Down Borough Council and the Ulster Scots Agency, takes place on the shores of Strangford Lough.
Billed as Northern Ireland's only dedicated sea shanty festival, it highlights the maritime traditions of the Ards Peninsula. The four-day programme features live performances from shanty groups including The Molgoggers from Cork, Hooks and Crooks from Waterford, The Causeway Shantymen from Portrush, and local all-women group The Selkies. Jock the Box from Scotland, marching bands and bagpipes are also scheduled.
Heritage events include maritime exhibitions at P.A.S.T., Ulster-Scots talks, guided walking tours and pop-up stands. At Portaferry Library, poet Maura Johnston will lead workshops, and Paddy Montague will present an evening of storytelling and comedy. Podcasting sessions will record local residents Carol Gilmore and Elaine McFeeters.
Families can take part in treasure trails, crafts, face painting and water challenges with Mobile Adventure's Viking John Hubbucks. The local Credit Union is supporting the children's programme. Exploris Aquarium will be open, and the RNLI and Queen's University Belfast Marine Biology Station will hold open days on marine safety and biodiversity.
A market will operate in The Square, and a quiet area will be available for visitors needing a calmer space. Environmental measures include branded reusable pint and half-pint glasses sold for £2 to reduce single-use plastic waste.
Tickets are available via Eventbrite.
