Tributes Paid Following Death of Former SDLP Councillor Gus Hastings
Former SDLP councillor Gus Hastings has died, prompting tributes from party leader Colum Eastwood and other political and community colleagues.
Mr Hastings was first elected to Derry City Council in 2011 for the Rural DEA and later served on Derry City and Strabane District Council representing the Faughan DEA from 2014 until 2019.
Colum Eastwood, the MP for Foyle and former SDLP leader, said he was deeply saddened by the news. He described Mr Hastings as someone who cared deeply about the communities he served and who was always available to help constituents, a reputation built over many years in public life.
Mr Eastwood added that his late colleague was a longstanding and committed party member who was generous with his time and experience, and whose friendship and support meant a great deal to those who worked alongside him.
Beyond elected office, Mr Hastings was a founding member of Strathfoyle Community Association and had been involved in its work for more than five decades. The association said there were few people in Derry who had not been impacted by his efforts.
He was also a founding member of the RAPID project in 1994 and served as chairperson of the Faughan Valley Landscape Partnership, where he was credited with helping to transform the area.
Foyle MLA Mark H Durkan called Mr Hastings a champion for social justice who was passionate about opportunities for young people and challenging sectarianism.
Current SDLP councillor Declan Norris described Mr Hastings as a mentor and dear friend who spoke with him nearly every day and whose knowledge and wisdom were invaluable.
Councillor Lilian Seenoi Barr recalled how during her term as mayor, Mr Hastings proudly showed her around his community, demonstrating his deep connection to Strathfoyle.
Enagh Youth Forum said Mr Hastings quietly made a difference to countless lives and always fought for improved services in the rural area.
Mr Hastings is survived by his wife Bridie, daughters, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
