First Unionist Chairperson Appointed to Newry, Mourne and Down Council
Newry, Mourne and Down District Council has appointed a new chairperson and deputy chairperson. DUP Councillor Glyn Hanna is now chairperson, while SDLP Councillor Doire Finn is deputy chairperson.
Councillor Hanna is the first Unionist to hold the chairperson role since the council was created in 2015. In his speech to the council, he said he was proud and humbled to serve.
Hanna has lived and worked in the Mournes area his whole life, running his own business. He cited a long family connection to farming and fishing, saying that strong sense of place motivated him to stand for election. He argued that councillors should cooperate to deliver the best services for the district.
As chairperson, Hanna intends to promote local businesses and champion economic growth. He also plans to advocate for better healthcare facilities, improved roads, and essential services for rural communities. Hanna committed to recognising the district's diversity, making a particular effort to celebrate minority traditions including Ulster Scots culture. He said he would carry out the role with integrity, fairness, and respect.
Hanna has chosen two charities for his year in office: Mourne Stimulus Day Centre, which supports adults with physical and learning disabilities, and Heartbeat NI, which supports children living with heart disease.
New Deputy Chairperson Doire Finn said she was honoured by her nomination. She has previously spoken up for local businesses, community groups, young people, and the arts and cultural sector. Finn stated her belief that politics should improve everyday lives and help communities reach their potential. She aims to push for investment, quality jobs, and thriving communities, highlighting the district's creative and community spirit.
