Gary Middleton, the Democratic Unionist Party MLA for Foyle, will resign from the Northern Ireland Assembly on 10 April. He cited ongoing mental health challenges that have limited his ability to represent constituents.

Middleton, who has served as Foyle MLA since 2015, stated that he needs to prioritise recovery and cannot do so while holding public office. He is receiving treatment through the National Health Service, supported by family and friends.

In his announcement, Middleton noted recent ill health over the last few months. He expressed hope from the treatment and support, describing a path toward improvement.

DUP leader Gavin Robinson described Middleton as the sole unionist MLA in Foyle and a dedicated representative for Londonderry and surrounding areas. Robinson said Middleton maintained a consistent voice since 2015 despite facing threats from republicans.

Robinson added that the party regrets Middleton's departure and will support his recovery. The DUP has seven days after the resignation to name a replacement.

Colum Eastwood, Foyle MP, commended Middleton's decision to prioritise health. Eastwood served with him on Derry City Council in 2011 and as fellow MLAs in prior Assemblies.

Matthew O'Toole of the SDLP, Jon Burrows of the UUP, and Naomi Long of Alliance also offered tributes, recognising Middleton's openness about mental health.
