Dermot Murnaghan, a television news presenter who spent part of his childhood in Armagh, died on July 11 at the age of 68 following a battle with prostate cancer.

Born in Barnstaple, Devon, to an English Protestant mother and a Catholic father from Omagh, County Tyrone, Murnaghan moved with his family to Armagh when his father took a civil engineering post. He attended St Malachy's Primary School in Armagh and later secondary school in Holywood, County Down.

Murnaghan's great-grandfather purchased the land that would become Lisanelly Barracks in Omagh in 1888 for £500. The site passed to the British Army shortly before the Second World War.

In 2012, Murnaghan returned to Armagh to explore the city's architectural heritage for a council video. He reflected on the impact of Archbishop Richard Robinson's 18th-century vision for a university town and shared his own childhood memories of being impressed by Armagh's Georgian character.

He commended the city council's efforts to balance heritage preservation with the need for a vibrant, living city.
