A Derry man has been given a suspended prison sentence after admitting disorderly behaviour and assaulting a police officer.

John Paul O’Hagan, 43, of Rinmore Drive, pleaded guilty to the offences, which occurred on 20 March.

Londonderry Magistrates’ Court heard that police were called after O’Hagan’s daughter reported him trying to get into the house.

When officers arrived, O’Hagan was abusive, pushed an officer in the chest, and continued shouting despite warnings to stop.

Defence barrister Sinead Rogan said her client used alcohol to cope and that he accepted responsibility for his actions.

District Judge Ted Magill told O’Hagan he had already spent five days in custody and that further offending would lead to more time behind bars.

O’Hagan was sentenced to three months in prison, suspended for 18 months.
