James Richard Doherty, 26, from Maghaberry Prison, admitted a disorderly behaviour charge from June 21 last year at Derry Magistrates' Court.

Police attended an Apprentice Boys parade in Derry at 11.35am. As the parade moved towards Carlisle Road, Doherty shouted abuse at officers in view of spectators.

Doherty kept shouting abuse. He called out support for the 'Derry lads’ cartel'. Near Ferryquay Gate, he yelled at police in a loud aggressive manner and called them scum.

Defence solicitor Keith Kyle told the court the incident involved only verbal disorder. Kyle said Doherty felt police had crowded around him. Kyle added that Doherty accepted his behaviour was wrong.

District Judge Oonagh Mullan noted Doherty's 56 prior convictions. She imposed a two-month prison sentence, suspended for 12 months.
