Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council will consider a proposal to host the UK National Armed Forces Day in 2028 following the local event in Coleraine this month.

At a meeting of the full council in June, DUP councillor Philip Anderson tabled a notice of motion asking the council to explore the possibility and submit a formal bid to the appropriate authorities. Deputy Mayor Sandra Hunter, who chaired the meeting, confirmed the motion will be examined by the council’s Leisure and Development Committee at a future date.

The move came after Armed Forces Day 2026 was held in Coleraine on Saturday 20 June. A statement from Mayor Dawn Huggins, read by the Deputy Mayor, described it as a tremendous event and credited the dedication of council employees.

She said months of planning and teamwork across multiple departments were essential, and that the professionalism and commitment shown by staff were evident from preparations to clean-up. Feedback from attendees was very positive, she added.

Mayor Huggins noted the event also delivered a significant economic boost to Coleraine and helped to bring people together while strengthening community spirit.

Communities Minister Gordon Lyons wrote to the council with similar praise, the meeting heard. Deputy Mayor Hunter added her own thanks to cleaning staff, remarking that the town was left immaculate within hours of the event finishing.
