Traffic disruption expected as Armed Forces Day draws 25,000 to Coleraine
An estimated 25,000 people are expected in Coleraine on Saturday for Armed Forces Day, bringing significant traffic disruption to the town centre.
The event, hosted by Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council, will begin at 10am on June 20 and include a fly-past by the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight Dakota and a parachute display by the RAF Falcons. Other attractions include a flag abseil, a gun salute, and a military village. A quiet period will be observed from 10.15am.
Access to Christie Park and Coleraine Leisure Centre will be closed from 6pm on Friday, June 19, until approximately 6pm on Saturday. Strand Road will be reduced to a single lane from 7am on the day, and airspace over the town will be restricted between 6am and 8pm.
Two processions are planned. The first leaves the leisure centre at 10.45am, following Railway Road, Mill Street, Long Commons, Kingsgate Street, Church Street to the Diamond. A second parade at 11.30am extends the route along Queen Street, Circular Road, Coleraine Old Bridge, Strand Road to Christie Park.
Park-and-ride services will operate from Rugby Avenue, with additional park-and-walk sites at the Vineyard, the Crescent, and NRC. Accessible parking and a shuttle bus will run from Market Yard, and spaces must be pre-booked. Signposted diversions will guide traffic, but police urge anyone not attending to seek alternative routes.
The PSNI asked that all visitors enjoy the family event safely and act responsibly.
