Fishing Vessel Towed to Safety by Larne RNLI After Mechanical Failure
A fishing vessel with two people aboard was towed to safety by Larne RNLI on Monday evening after suffering a mechanical failure close to major shipping lanes.
HM Coastguard requested assistance at 7.42pm, prompting the launch of the all-weather lifeboat Machiko Nancy. The volunteer crew located the disabled boat north-east of the East Maidens Lighthouse.
Coxswain Chris Dorman confirmed both crew members were safe and that the breakdown was due to a mechanical fault. A tow line was secured and the vessel was brought into the Port of Larne, where an alongside tow manoeuvre took place within the harbour basin.
Shore crew and Coastguard personnel received the fishing boat at the south end quay. The RNLI noted that the casualties had been wearing appropriate safety equipment and had the means to alert emergency services.
Following the operation, Mr Dorman advised anyone planning sea trips to check their vessels, maintain engines, carry tools and spares, and ensure sufficient fuel. He also stressed the importance of calling 999 or 112 and asking for the Coastguard when in difficulty.
