Down High School has officially opened its new campus on Strangford Road following a £53 million construction project. The building, completed in June 2025, welcomed its first 950 pupils at the start of the autumn term.

Construction began in January 2023 and was led by contractor Graham Construction NI Ltd, with design by an integrated team headed by McAdam Design. During groundworks, an early neolithic site was uncovered, prompting one of the most extensive archaeological excavations on the island of Ireland in three decades.

At the opening ceremony, Education Minister Paul Givan said the investment delivered state-of-the-art classrooms and sports facilities including a sports hall and pitches. He wished the school community continued success.

Principal Maud Perry described the event as a milestone that connected the school’s 1933 founding and enduring traditions with a new chapter for pupils and staff.

Mervyn Storey, Chairperson of the Education Authority, said the campus represented a significant investment for young people in Newry, Mourne and Down. He stated that fit-for-purpose facilities are essential for every child to reach their full potential.
