A new community walking group has been launched in Randalstown, County Antrim, led by local sisters Aislinn Joyce and her sister Meagan.

The pair approached Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council with the idea and subsequently completed the Walking for All training programme, delivered by walking officer Bridie Kelly.

The programme is funded through PEACEPLUS, a scheme managed by the Special EU Programmes Body.

The group, named The Main Walkers, holds walks every Wednesday at 7pm, starting from the Viaduct entrance on New Street. Newcomers are asked to arrive at 6.45pm to register.

Mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey, Councillor Henry Cushinan, praised the sisters' initiative and said they had demonstrated community spirit and a commitment to helping others become more active.

Aislinn Joyce said she and her sister had enjoyed encouraging more people to get active and had been pleased with the positive response so far. She added that they looked forward to welcoming more participants throughout the summer and beyond.

The walks are designed to support physical and mental wellbeing, foster social connections, and give residents the chance to explore the natural beauty of Randalstown and its surroundings.
