A new programme called Walking for All launched on 27 February 2026 at The Junction in Dungannon. The initiative receives €7.5 million from the Special EU Programmes Body under the PEACEPLUS programme. Outscape leads the effort to provide accessible walking activities in rural Northern Ireland and adjacent counties in the Republic of Ireland.

The programme plans to involve more than 14,000 adults through short regular walks in local areas. It targets people of all ages backgrounds and abilities to enhance physical health address inactivity and combat social isolation. Organisers expect to form nearly 600 walking groups over three years led by trained volunteers.

Outscape coordinates with 15 partners including eight local authorities the Causeway Coast and Glens Heritage Trust and six local sports partnerships. Associate partners include Sport Ireland Mountaineering Ireland and the Public Health Agency. Sixteen Walking for All Officers already recruited will train walk leaders and support group development.

Armagh City Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council appointed Ryan McQuillan as its Walking for All Officer. Newry Mourne and Down District Council named Arlene Johnston to the role. Lord Mayor Alderman Stephen Moutray of Armagh City Banbridge and Craigavon endorsed the programme for advancing rural health. Councillor Philip Campbell of Newry Mourne and Down called it a key chance to build walking groups.

DAERA Minister Andrew Muir highlighted departmental funding through PEACEPLUS to foster community ties in rural settings. SEUPB CEO Gina McIntyre noted the fit with programme goals for health and connection in areas lacking sports facilities. Outscape's Gareth Moore and Chair Dawson Stelfox stressed gains in activity levels and social bonds. Ministers from the Republic of Ireland also backed the cross-border project.

PEACEPLUS supports reconciliation and cooperation after decades of conflict in Northern Ireland. Structured walking initiatives align with evidence on cost-effective ways to improve wellbeing and community participation.
