A strong oil smell has affected businesses in the John Street area of Omagh for approximately one month. The odour has been noticeable along John Street and part of the Kevlin Road, with the offices of the Ulster Herald among the properties impacted. Staff there opened windows and doors to try to clear the smell.

Fermanagh and Omagh District Council (FODC) began an investigation after receiving complaints from businesses and employees in the area. NI Water assisted the council's environmental health department in tracing the source of the oil leak.

NI Water has confirmed that the source of the leak has been traced and that the owner of the property involved is arranging repairs. A spokesperson said the incident has had no impact on water and wastewater services for customers.

The council confirmed it received complaints alleging a smell of oil in the John Street area but could not comment further as the investigation is ongoing.
