A man has been remanded in custody charged with placing a low-grade explosive device in Glenarm.

Paul Hunter Baxter, whose address is listed as Feystown Road, Glenarm, faces three charges. The first alleges that he unlawfully and maliciously did an act with intent to cause an explosion likely to endanger life or cause serious injury to property by placing a device. The second charge involves possessing fireworks, described as bangers, at Feystown Road. The third is obstructing a police officer.

The charges follow an incident on 6 April. Shortly after 10am, police received a report of a suspicious device on the Feystown Road. Ammunition Technical Officers attended and carried out a controlled explosion on the item, which was later deemed a viable device.

Baxter appeared before Ballymena Magistrates' Court on Thursday via video link from prison. A prosecutor told District Judge Nigel Broderick that the case file would be with the Public Prosecution Service from police by 8 July.

The defence indicated that CCTV from the defendant's home and another property could assist his case and asked whether police had viewed the footage. Judge Broderick said the prosecution could not yet answer that question but suggested the defence contact the investigating officer directly.

Baxter was further remanded in custody until 23 July.
