Donaghadee Residents Object to Proposed Lidl Supermarket on High Bangor Road
Plans for a new Lidl supermarket on the High Bangor Road in Donaghadee have met with opposition from local residents and a former mayor.
The proposal would see a 1.2-hectare store built on unzoned land near the Montgomery Meadows and Hadlow housing developments. The site had received planning approval for 16 houses in April 2024.
Robbie and Rachel Lemon, whose property is adjacent to the planned delivery area, have raised concerns about potential noise, light pollution and traffic. They said the development would force the removal of a mature hedgerow and ten trees to make way for a 144-space car park.
Mr Lemon noted that the High Bangor Road already has traffic issues, with vehicles often exceeding the 40 mph limit. He warned that a right-turn into the supermarket could create a safety hazard.
The couple also argued the out-of-town retail site could harm independent traders in Donaghadee and attract anti-social behaviour when the store is closed. They have set up an email list to coordinate opposition.
Alderman Mark Brooks said historical evidence shows out-of-town retail can damage town centres. He questioned whether a Lidl would affect the town's busy local shops, adding that a council survey previously found many residents do their weekly shop in Bangor or Newtownards.
Residents have been urged to sign up to the campaign email at donaghadeelidlobjectors@gmail.com.
