Sinn Féin has selected two candidates to contest the East Derry constituency in the next Northern Ireland Assembly election, set for May 2027. Economy Minister Caoimhe Archibald and Limavady councillor Kathleen McGurk were confirmed at a launch event in Limavady.

North Belfast MP John Finucane described the party's aim of returning two MLAs from the constituency for the first time as ambitious but achievable. He noted that only 569 votes separated Sinn Féin from the DUP in the 2022 Assembly election.

Archibald stated her commitment to delivering for workers, families and communities. She highlighted pressures such as rising costs and strains on public services and said Sinn Féin would focus on protecting workers, supporting local businesses, expanding apprenticeships and securing well-paid jobs.

McGurk, who serves as a councillor, said she understood the daily issues facing people. She pledged to work to make childcare and housing more affordable, create jobs and improve opportunities for young people.

The selection comes as parties prepare for the next Assembly election, with constituency boundaries unchanged since the previous poll.
