Sinn Féin MLA Maolíosa McHugh to Step Down from West Tyrone Seat
Sinn Féin MLA Maolíosa McHugh has confirmed he will not stand for re-election to the Northern Ireland Assembly in the May 2027 election. He represents the West Tyrone constituency.
McHugh entered the assembly in 2019 after co-option to replace Michaela Boyle. He won election in that seat in 2022.
He first won election to Strabane District Council in 2011 for the Derg ward. McHugh secured re-election to Derry City and Strabane District Council in 2015. He served as mayor of that council in 2017-18.
McHugh lost his council seat in 2019 elections.
He described serving his party and constituents as the honour of his life. McHugh stated he worked without prejudice to assist everyone in the constituency through his Strabane office. He pursued advancement of Irish unity and promotion of the Irish language for all.
McHugh plans to remain in his MLA role until the election. He made the decision to allow party planning for growth ahead of 2027.
He thanked party leadership, assembly colleagues, and local workers for their support. McHugh expressed gratitude to voters who elected him as councillor and MLA. He intends to stay involved with Sinn Féin and contribute to its national development.
This follows Foyle MLA Pádraig Delargy's February announcement that he will not seek re-election.
