Belfast-Dublin rail delays to continue after Dublin line damage repaired
Repairs to damaged overhead power lines in Dublin have been completed, but cross-border rail passengers between Belfast and Dublin are still experiencing delays on Wednesday.
Irish Rail said that services are being restored and should fully return to normal later in the day. The disruption began on Tuesday evening when lines were damaged in the Raheny area at around 8.30pm.
Two morning Enterprise trains from Belfast, at 9am and 11am, were cancelled. Replacement buses were used to shuttle passengers between Dublin’s Connolly Station and Drogheda during the morning rush.
The company estimates that 15,000 to 20,000 commuters across the Republic of Ireland were affected by the service interruptions.
Irish Rail’s Barry Kenny said that repair work was delayed deliberately to avoid shutting the line during a concert at Malahide on Tuesday night. He explained that starting repairs at the time of the damage would have stranded thousands of concertgoers, potentially causing safety risks.
Customers on the Belfast-Dublin route are advised to check for updates as services return to schedule.
