An attempted murder in Belfast sparked a violent response in which individuals were targeted because of their skin colour. The unrest followed the attack on Stephen Ogilvie, with rioters ignoring the migration status of those they attacked.

Two Ugandan care workers, Sumayah Nakazibwe and Stella Ariokot, were sheltering in their home as nearby houses burned. They were advised to wear their care uniforms as a protective measure.

Pastor Jack McKee intervened to rescue the women. He said he never expected to have to save Christian women from assault in a Protestant community. He persuaded approximately 20 masked rioters, some carrying stones, to allow him access to the property.
