Omagh estate agent Alan Porter dies aged 70
Alan William Porter, an estate agent and auctioneer who ran a long-established family business in Omagh, has died at the age of 70. He passed away at his home on Knocksilla Park on Tuesday, June 2, following a lengthy illness.
A service of thanksgiving for his life was held at Trinity Presbyterian Church in Omagh, with burial afterwards at Greenhill Cemetery.
Mr Porter took over William Porter and Sons Auctioneers and Estate Agents from his father and operated from premises on the town's High Street. He handled residential and agricultural property sales.
Former customers and friends paid tribute after news of his death. Krystal Campbell recalled that he had been a regular at the Pink Elephant cafe and always took time to say hello. Sue Thomas described him as a man who enjoyed chatting with people he met. Michael Johnston remembered water-skiing together on Lough Muck.
Mr Porter was educated at Omagh Academy Preparatory Department and later at Coleraine Academical Institution. Outside work, he travelled to the Far East and east Africa. In later years he often visited Rossnowlagh in County Donegal and spent family holidays on the south coast of England.
After retiring four years ago, he was a frequent visitor to Omagh Accies Rugby Club and a regular at the Silverbirch Hotel in the town.
