Omagh Engineer Marks 50 Years with Local Manufacturing Firm
Aidan Devlin has completed 50 years of service with Terex at its Omagh site. He holds the position of health and safety officer there.
Devlin started work on March 6, 1976, as a fitter welder at John Finlay Engineering in Cabragh. That firm became part of Terex in 1999. He transferred to the Omagh site on Gillygooley Road in 1980.
His early career followed a nine-month engineering training course at the Government Training Centre in Omagh. The training covered turning, bench fitting and welding. He attended St Colman's High School in Strabane for A-levels.
Devlin worked under managers Eddie Jardine and Hugh Starrett in Cabragh. He built static screens, tray feeders and mould boxes for block machinery.
Over 15 years, he advanced to roles including quality assurance manager and product design manager. In June 1998, he took the health and safety officer position after William Finley left for the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service.
Devlin reported unhappiness in product design to David Lyons. Powerscreen had taken over Finlay at that time. The company shifted him to protect his job.
Now nearing 70, Devlin has no retirement plans. He enjoys fishing, photography and gardening outside work.
