Donaghadee Summer Festival to Host Flag Football and Ulster Fry Championship
The Donaghadee Summer Festival will take place from June 20 to September 9, organised by the Donaghadee Community Development Association (DCDA). More than 100 events are planned at the town’s harbour and seafront.
Mayor Craig Blaney will officially launch the festival on June 20 at the Donaghadee RNLI Open Day.
A town cryer will appear in the town centre on June 13 and throughout the summer.
On July 5, the Valhalla Street Theatre group from Newtownards will perform "America’s On the Water" on the pier. The play depicts American colonists under Captain Paul Jones sailing into Donaghadee in 1778.
The All-Ireland American Flag Football League competition will be held at Donaghadee Rugby Club on August 8. Twelve teams from across Ireland will compete, hosted by the North Down Dragons. An American-style barbecue and live music will accompany the event.
The fourth Ulster Fry World Championship takes place on August 15, with chef Jenny Bristow as judge.
Sunday band concerts are scheduled at Lemon’s Wharf on August 2, 9, 16, 23, and 30.
A Summer Artisan Market and the Horse Relay organised by Gransha Equestrian will both be held on August 29.
DCDA chairman Denis Waterworth said the festival marks the 250th anniversary of American Independence with events linking the community to American culture. He noted new attractions including the pier drama, horse relay, market, and town cryer, as well as a walking tour of locations from the television drama "Hope Street".
He thanked Ards and North Down Borough Council and sponsors Ann Magee, Pier 36, Lotus Homes, Murdock Builders Merchants, UPS, Strand Homes, and Lakeland Dairies for their support.
