An explosive device has been discovered in a car in County Monaghan and is understood to have been destined for Northern Ireland.

Former Sinn Féin president Gerry Adams condemned those responsible for the attempted attack, describing it as an action that undermines the republican objective of a united Ireland. He said there is no rationale for the existence of armed groups and called on them to disband.

Adams emphasised that the political and democratic framework of the Good Friday Agreement offers the only legitimate path to achieving Irish unity. He urged anyone with a political strategy to contest the upcoming local and assembly elections.
