A youth employability programme in east Belfast has culminated in an event designed to connect young people with local support services. The Legacy Project, funded by the International Fund for Ireland and delivered by Eastside Greenways, targets 16 to 25-year-olds not in education, employment or training.

On Thursday, young participants organised "You're A Legend" at the Carew Family Centre. The event formed part of the Eastside Arts Festival and brought together organisations including Housing Rights NI, Volunteer Now and discount supermarket In This Together.

Pierce Mullan, a volunteer, said the project helped him secure his first part-time job. He noted that many opportunities go unnoticed by young people despite constant social media use.

Fellow volunteer Poppy Kipling reported that the programme improved her confidence and personal development. She is due to return to technical college after the project ends.

Youth Project Coordinator Siobhan McKinley said the group wanted to demonstrate that barriers to employment and wellbeing can be overcome. She said participants developed research, event planning and communication skills, which can be used in job applications.

McKinley added that the two-year programme provided routine and purpose for many, with the ultimate goal of making themselves unnecessary as a support. The event was a culmination of that work.
