South West College has introduced two new part-time degree pathways in hair, beauty and barbering, validated by the Open University.

The Foundation Degree in Innovative Practice in Hair, Beauty and Barbering replaces the college's previous Hair and Beauty Management course. Alongside it, a new BA (Hons) Innovative Practice in Hair, Beauty and Barbering will be offered as a top-up qualification, which the college says is a first for its provision in this field.

Both programmes are designed to meet industry demand for higher-level skills, leadership development and specialist expertise. The Foundation Degree includes a Higher Level Apprenticeship route, with employer partnerships already in place with Thérapie Clinic at its salons in Omagh, Belfast, Newry and Derry/Londonderry, and with the Killyhevlin Hotel in Enniskillen.

Delivery of the BA (Hons) programme will be based in Dungannon, while the Foundation Degree and apprenticeship route will operate primarily from the Omagh campus. The college stated it is currently the only provider in Northern Ireland offering this specific combination of Foundation Degree, Higher Level Apprenticeship and BA (Hons) progression within the sector.

The college said the programmes are aimed at school leavers, current industry professionals and those seeking to move into leadership, teaching, specialist practice or business development roles. Part-time study is intended to provide flexibility for learners already working or managing other commitments.

Tanya Purvis, curriculum manager at South West College, said the pathways represent a step forward for learners and the wider industry in Northern Ireland. She highlighted the opportunity for students to develop advanced technical and leadership skills while building direct links with employers through apprenticeships and partnerships.
